The Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Civic Integration supported all candidates for Public Defenders who spoke at the hearings in the committee and did not withdraw their candidacy.

Committee Chairman Mikheil Sarjveladze explained that the faction of the ruling party decided to support all of the above candidates, and give the opportunity to make a decision to the full composition of the Parliament.

Nazi Janezashvili, one of the candidates who enjoys NGO support, was unable to secure the committee’s support. She declined to speak at the hearing, but did not withdraw her candidacy. Ultimately, Janezashvili received the support of only two members of the committee – Nato Chkheidze (“United National Movement”) and Anna Natsvlishvili (“Lelo”).

Other candidates, supported by NGOs, overcame the committee’s barrier. Giorgi Burjanadze received nine votes, Anna Abashidze – seven.
