An explosion occurred at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid
The incident happened at about 1pm local time.
According to eyewitnesses, at the time of the explosion, the victim had a letter in his hands. He received minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
According to the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleg Nikolenko, an envelope arrived at the embassy, which exploded in the hands of the commandant during the inspection. “The commandant received minor injuries, he is now hospitalized, he is receiving the necessary medical care. There are no threats to his life,” Nikolenko wrote on Facebook. Other embassy staff were not injured, he added.
“There have been cases of attacks on our diplomatic institutions and employees in history. But explosives in an envelope is the first time, ”a source in the country’s Foreign Ministry told the BBC Ukrainian Service.
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dmitry Kuleba, instructed to urgently strengthen the security of all Ukrainian embassies. The minister also said that whoever was behind the organization of this explosion, they will not be able to intimidate Ukrainian diplomats or stop their daily work to counter Russian aggression.
Investigators, cynologists and intelligence officers are working at the scene of the explosion.
Versions of what happened have not yet been reported, but it is known that the area where the embassy is located is cordoned off, and the police are acting according to the protocol of the anti-terrorist operation.
