Public Defender of Georgia Nino Lomjaria said that she had met with Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili and shared her impressions of Mikheil Saakashvili’s state of health with her.

As the Ombudsman noted, Zurabishvili replied that her representative is in contact with the Empathy Center, whose experts are preparing an opinion on the state of health of the politician and thanked her for the information provided.

“Regarding the suspension of punishment or release for health reasons, we can apply to the court with the opinion of a “Friend of the Court” [«Amicus curiae»] or with a recommendation to the relevant departments. We have done so in similar cases and do not rule out that, if necessary, we will do so. I did not expect that the situation would be so difficult that he would be so physically weakened. The doctors themselves on the spot say that he has [наблюдается] negative dynamics, whether it be neurological or otherwise,” said Lomjaria.

“Amicus curiae” is a legal institution that is currently widespread in a number of countries, as well as in international courts. Originally a legal term in Roman law. The term refers to a person who assists the court by bringing to the attention of the court information relevant to the case.
