The fact that violence is a disgrace should be learned by every member of society and should not voluntarily or involuntarily support rapists, – said Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia Alexander Darakhvelidze.

Darakhvelidze responded to the crime that took place in the nunnery and noted that the police will do everything to ensure that these persons are brought to justice before the law in the strictest way.

“This is a very serious crime and it caused justified indignation of every member of society. As you know, the police very quickly, within about 2 hours after the crime was committed, identified and detained the perpetrators. They face the most severe punishment provided for by our Criminal Code – from 15 to 20 years or indefinite imprisonment. Of course, the police will do everything to ensure that these persons are answerable before the law in the strictest way,” said Darakhvelidze.

When asked how he would assess the position of the patriarchate, which lays responsibility on the media, the deputy interior minister says that he can speak about the causes of the crime only on the basis of scientific conclusions.

“In general, the circumstances of the commission of any crime are studied on the basis of relevant studies, until there are such studies that will give us an accurate, scientific conclusion about what caused a particular crime, it will be difficult for me to assess the reasons,” Darakhvelidze said.

According to him, law enforcement agencies are pursuing the strictest criminal policy towards perpetrators of violence, but it is necessary to work in another direction.

“After 2017-18, the legislation has been significantly revised, up to 10,000 restraining orders are issued annually, investigations are started in up to 5,000 cases, and if we look at the number of convicts in the penitentiary system, then a very large proportion are people convicted of this crime. We are doing everything in this direction, but only punishment-oriented approaches have not been able to fully bring results, now is the time to work on other issues, the inclusion of society is very important. The fact that violence is a shame must be learned by every member of society and, voluntarily or unwittingly, must not support the rapists. Last week we also launched a campaign for this and we will meet and talk with everyone to plan together what should be done, what is the role of society, the media, how to properly cover this or that fact in order to support the victims and be focused on their protection. The existence of programs to correct the behavior of rapists is also very important,” said Alexander Darakhvelidze.
