The power of the leader of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, shares with Russia the responsibility for the war crimes committed in Ukraine, for which he must be held accountable before the international tribunal and the International Criminal Court. This is stated in a resolution approved by the European Parliament, reports dsnews.ua.

In the document, the MEPs repeat the call to the EU countries and the European Commission to impose the same sanctions against Belarus that they imposed on Russia. They also call on EU institutions to support Belarusian independent news agencies and for more systematic cooperation between the EU and representatives of the Belarusian democratic forces.

The European Parliament also strongly condemns the existence in Belarus of more than 1,400 political prisoners against whom unjustified and politically motivated sentences have been passed.

It also condemns the ongoing imprisonment of 2022 Nobel Peace Prize winner Ales Bialiatski and calls on the Lukashenka regime to secure his release before the awards ceremony in Oslo on 10 December.
