The European Parliament supported the decision not to recognize passports and other travel documents issued by Russia in the occupied regions of Georgia and Ukraine.

In particular, the decision was supported by 531 deputies, seven opposed, and 34 abstained.

According to the proposal, “The Commission should consult with EU member states and draw up a list of Russian travel documents that should not be accepted, although people fleeing the conflict in Ukraine will still be able to enter the EU on humanitarian grounds.”

After the vote, rapporteur Juan Fernando López Aguilar said that the European Parliament is ready to do everything to continue to put pressure on Russia by legal and political means so that Putin pays a high price for the illegal war and international crimes against Ukraine and its people.

Once the decision is also formally adopted by the Council of the European Union, it will enter into force on the day following its publication in the Official Journal of the EU.
