“The Council of the European Union agreement granting candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova and recognizing Georgia’s European perspective is a sign of strong political support,” said MEP Tonino Picula, who is a rapporteur on the new EU enlargement strategy.
As Tonino Picula noted in his speech, each country should be judged on its own merits.
“Each country should be judged on its own merit. The EU must overcome the impasse of enlargement, which must be done by modernizing both the political goal and the methodology of the accession process. And for this, a new EU enlargement strategy is needed, in which political tasks will be clearly defined, necessary and timely institutional reforms will be carried out. The rule of law must be central to this process. We must strategically use targeted, conditional, clear benchmarks,” Picula said.
