No strong signals from Georgia about NATO membership or status improvement

“Georgia’s membership in NATO is exactly what NATO should help Georgia with, it is very important that Georgia does everything in order not to lose this opportunity,” MEP Rasa Yuknevicienė believes.

“We have a new reality. The Madrid summit presented a very important document, the new NATO strategy, which refers to Russia as a threat and China as an adversary, although not on the level of Russia. All these dangers for the future were also mentioned. This was a very important step forward because Russia was mentioned as a partner in the Lisbon Strategy. Look, in 12 years, Russia has officially become the main threat in the documents, and this means a lot, because because of this, NATO had to change its strategy on its territory. This continues now – brigades in the Baltic countries, as well as increased security on the Black Sea, in countries such as Romania, Bulgaria. Turkey is also very important. Having Georgia here in NATO is exactly where NATO should help Georgia. It is very important that Georgia does everything not to lose this opportunity. This is the same as EU membership. Finland and Sweden are on their way to joining, but there is no strong message from Georgia that Georgian Dream is active in NATO and is asking the alliance for membership or an upgrade in its status. This is what Georgia has to say, as happened in Sweden and Finland, where people and politicians, whether opposition or the ruling power, agreed and they succeeded,” Yuknevicienė said in Madrid, where the NATO Parliamentary Assembly is being held.
