“We will discuss” – Kobakhidze on regulation of NGO funding

The ruling party will discuss the issue of possible support for the People’s Forces initiative to “create a strict legislative framework” for funding non-governmental organizations, Georgian Dream chairman Irakli Kobakhidze said.

However, he assured that the eradication of the NGO sector is not the goal of the party.

“When Power of the People publishes letters, we cannot comment on them. We do not know what this initiative is. When it is presented, any initiative, including this one, will be discussed in accordance with the regulations.

I have read that they say they want to offer something in line with Western best practice. Let’s see what it is, how it corresponds to Western practice, and based on this we will discuss. The death of the NGO sector is not our goal. Therefore, we will look at the content of the initiative and, based on this, we will discuss,” the politician said.

Recall that the former members of the Georgian Dream, who united in the People’s Power movement, announced the preparation of a bill to “create a strict legislative framework” for financing NGOs, which they consider to be US agents.

Irakli Kobakhidze himself said that he would refrain from public discussion about whose tasks NGO representatives are performing.
