White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan assesses the return of Kherson by the Ukrainians as an extraordinary victory.

“As you can see, the Ukrainians have just won an extraordinary victory, when the only regional center captured by Russia in this war is now again under the Ukrainian flag, this is a very remarkable thing,” he said.

A victory at Kherson has broader strategic implications, Sullivan said, because the ability to push the Russians across the river means places like Odessa and the Black Sea coast are less threatened.

“This is a great moment and is driven by the incredible resilience and skill of Ukrainians, backed by the united support of the United States and our allies,” Sullivan said.
