Three opposition parties in Georgia – “Girchi – More Freedom”, “Droa!” (“The time has come!”) and “Strategy Agmashenebeli” stated that the authorities deliberately do not comply with the requirements of the European Commission, which is necessary for the country to receive the status of an EU candidate. Party leaders Zurab Japaridze, Elene Khoshtaria and Sergo Chikhladze held a joint briefing where they commented on the adoption of a document on Georgia in the European Parliament. We are talking about an assessment of the country’s fulfillment of the terms of the Association Agreement with the EU, which included compromise amendments.

“The report, supported yesterday by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, is the first written document on Georgia adopted by an official European structure, which confirms that the Georgian Dream does not intend to implement the 12 recommendations that the European Commission set for our country in the summer, and thus deliberately refuses to from the status of an EU candidate”.

Japaridze, Khoshtaria and Chikhladze stated that the only way out in the current situation is to consolidate the pro-Western population and the political spectrum. The main goal is the speedy removal of the Georgian Dream from power.

“Four months later, instead of implementing 12 recommendations, Georgian Dream took the opposite action, further aggravating the situation and moving us away from the prospect of membership in the European family,” the Girchi – More Freedom, Droa! and “Strategy Agmashenebeli”.

It should be reminded that the document voted for by the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Relations contains a demand to the Georgian authorities to stop persecuting opponents for political reasons. Examples include court cases against owners of critical media and their families, in particular, the case of Mtavari Arkhi TV channel CEO Nika Gvaramia, as well as the case against leaders of the Lelo for Georgia party Mamuka Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze. The European Parliament also demands the release of ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili and transfer him to another country for treatment.

The document also refers to the deterioration of the state of freedom of speech in Georgia over the past year. The European Parliament demands an immediate cessation of ongoing political cases against TV Pirveli, Mtavari Arkhi and Formula. The report also emphasizes the need to reform the electoral system.
