The press spokesman for the European Commission’s External Relations Service circulates a statement in connection with the verdict of the Tbilisi Court of Appeal in the case of Nika Gvaramia, which notes that the European Union is closely following this case.

According to him, the EU does not comment on the composition of individual cases, but once again notes that questions were raised in this case, including by the Public Defender.

“Recall that “increasing efforts to ensure a free, professional, pluralistic and independent media environment, especially to ensure that criminal proceedings against media owners meet the highest legal standards” is one of the priorities identified by the European Commission.

The EU will continue to support the Georgian authorities in reforming the judiciary, focusing on the independence, transparency and quality of judicial procedures necessary to protect the rule of law. The European Union remains fully committed to supporting Georgia in fulfilling its 12 priorities so that the country can meet the expectations of its citizens in relation to European aspirations,” the official representative of the European Commission’s External Relations Service said in a statement.
