25 human rights organizations and dozens of activists representing the society of persons with disabilities are asking to appoint Ana Abashidze, one of the leaders of the Partnership for Human Rights PHR, to the post of Public Defender.

“We, persons with disabilities, parents of persons with disabilities, as well as people and organizations dealing with their problems, are aware of the importance of the Institute of the Public Defender of Georgia for the democratic image of our country and its rapprochement with the European Union; We express our gratitude to the current Public Defender, Ms. Nino Lomjaria, for protecting the rights of people with disabilities,” the appeal says.

The signatories of the appeal note that Ana Abashidze has all the academic, professional and personal qualities, as well as the values necessary for the future Public Defender of Georgia. And in her defensive activities, Abashidze distinguished herself with party impartiality, poise and honesty.

“She represents the interests of many people with disabilities in courts and other bodies when they do not have access to the necessary services, assistance, environment or experience discrimination or violence in closed institutions,” the statement said.

It also states that uniting around the rights of persons with disabilities and the election of Abashidze as Public Defender will be an important step towards political depolarization.
