At a special session of the UN General Assembly, 143 votes to five voted in favor of a resolution condemning the annexation of Ukraine by Russia. The document, co-authored by Georgia, states that “Donetsk, Kherson, Lugansk and Zaporozhye regions are temporarily occupied by Russia as a result of aggression that violates the territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence of Ukraine.”

The resolution calls on all states, the UN and international organizations not to recognize Russia’s claims to annexation and to demand the immediate withdrawal of the annexation declaration.

Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Syria and Nicaragua voted against the resolution.

35 members abstained from voting.
