Netflix has agreed to settle a lawsuit over the incorrect credits given to the legendary Georgian chess player Nona Gaprindashvili in the King’s Gambit series. The trial ended with an amicable agreement. Information about this was disseminated by foreign media.

The terms under which the dispute was settled were not disclosed.

An episode of the popular Netflix mini-series claims that Gaprindashvili has never competed against male chess players. In fact, by the year 1968 to which the episode refers, she had played against at least 59 male chess players, including at least ten grandmasters.

Gaprindashvili appealed to the US court, accusing the creators of the series of “brazen, extremely sexist and humiliating lies” and devaluing her achievements.

Netflix tried to dismiss the lawsuit, pointing out that they were entitled to the fiction. In early 2022, a court dismissed that argument, stating that holding a broad license prevents the show’s creators from slandering real people.

Netflix appealed the decision to the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, but the case was dismissed on Tuesday after a deal was struck.
