The prospects for Georgia’s accession to the European Union were discussed today in Brussels by EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell and Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.

Garibashvili called the recognition of the European perspective of Georgia in June this year a “strong motivation” and a “huge responsibility”.

According to the press service of the Georgian government, the parties spoke about the steps on which the granting of the status of an EU candidate to the country depends. All of them are formulated in 12 recommendations of the European Commission. One of the main conditions is to overcome political polarization.

Garibashvili assured Borrell that the government “spares no effort to improve the current political situation,” but to resolve the problem, “such involvement is also necessary on the part of the opposition.”

The Prime Minister of Georgia also told Borrell that his team “immediately responded to the decision of the Council of Europe and presented an action plan to implement 12 priorities.” At the same time, “all interested parties” were involved in the process, he stressed.

At the same time, Garibashvili doubted that Georgia would be able to succeed in the implementation of a large-scale reform program “without the strong support and assistance of the European Union.”

“The prime minister expressed hope that since Georgia has become part of the EU enlargement policy, the financial instruments that are available to those in the process of joining the EU will also apply to Georgia,” the press service informs.

Commenting on the meeting on his Twitter, Borrell confirmed that “the EU will support Georgia on its European path.” “We want Georgia to move forward with ambitious reforms,” he added.

The parties also discussed the security situation in the region and the situation in the occupied territories of Georgia.

“It is clear to everyone that Russia is pursuing the same policy towards Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova,” Garibashvili said.

The Prime Minister expressed hope that the European Union will continue to be committed to the policy of non-recognition of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region.
