Stoltenberg: Ukraine has the right to apply for membership, but priority now

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg actually evaded answering the question of whether he supports Ukraine’s application for an accelerated entry into the Alliance. According to “European Truth”, he said this at a press conference on Friday.

“Every democracy in Europe has the right to apply for membership in NATO. We respect this right, and in recent years we have said that the doors of the Alliance are open. NATO members at the Madrid summit clearly stated that they respect Ukraine’s right to choose its own future,” he said. Stoltenberg.

“The decision on membership should be made by all NATO members, this decision is made by consensus. Now we are focusing on immediate support for Ukraine so that it defends itself against a brutal Russian invasion, and this is the main focus of NATO allies,” he added.

Recall, on Friday, Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine had signed an application for accelerated entry into the North Atlantic Alliance and called on Western partners to implement the proposals prepared by Ukraine for security guarantees set out in the Kiev Security Treaty (Kyiv Security Compact).

This was preceded by the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin to annex four regions of Ukraine following what Russian propaganda called “referendums.”
