Yerevan’s proposal to extend the presence of Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh was not accepted. After a trilateral meeting with Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this during a speech in the Armenian Parliament.
Before the meeting in Sochi, Pashinyan stated:
“I officially declare: I am ready in Sochi to sign a document on the extension of the term for the deployment of Russian peacekeepers in Artsakh [Нагорный Карабах] for 15-20 years. I propose that the President of Russia make such a proposal, if necessary, I will make such a proposal, but Russia must support this proposal, since I cannot decide that Russian “peacekeepers” should stay there for any period.
A Russian peacekeeping mission of 2,000 troops was deployed in Nagorno-Karabakh after the end of the 2020 war for 5 years. Dissatisfaction with Russian peacekeepers is growing among the Armenian public.
