The ruling Georgian Dream party initiated a bill on new rules for appointing the Prosecutor General. According to the draft, instead of the usual majority, it will be enough for a candidate to enlist the support of 3/5 of the parliament.

Party chairman Irakli Kobakhidze said that the party does not agree with the bill, but allows an exception in order to implement the EU recommendation.

“According to the bill, the parliament of the next two convocations will elect the Prosecutor General with 3/5 votes for a period of six years. If the candidate does not receive so many votes, he will be elected by a simple majority, but only for a year.

This bill, agreed with the parliamentary opposition, has no analogue in any country for a simple reason – its content contradicts the logic of the management system and elementary legal principles, ”the politician said.

However, as Kobakhidze stressed, the ruling party has a “special priority” to implement the EU’s recommendations:

“In this regard, as an exception, we will turn a blind eye to legal principles and accept the new election rule without any conditions,” he said.
