Another power unit at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant now reconnected to Ukrainian power grid

The second of the six power units at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has been reconnected to Ukraine’s power grid following the shutdown on Thursday, 25 August. It is gradually regaining its production capacity.

Details: The power unit was reconnected to the power grid at 21:15 on Friday, 26 August.

Energoatom reports no concerns about the unit’s functioning or its safety systems.

Earlier on Friday, at 14:04, the first of the ZNPP power units that were disconnected from Ukraine’s power grid on the previous day, was reconnected again.

“Therefore, despite the numerous provocations carried out by the occupiers, the Zaporizhzhia NPP continues to operate in Ukraine’s power grid and to supply the electricity that our country needs,” Energoatom notes.

Background:

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is again producing electricity for the Ukrainian power network. One of the power units of the ZNPP that was stopped on Thursday has been re-connected to the power grid and is gaining capacity.

The visit of the IAEA mission to the ZNPP is planned for the next week; however, the occupiers are artificially creating all possible conditions so that the IAEA does not reach the plant.

The Russians captured the ZNPP on 4 March. Since early August, they have been shelling Nikopol that is located on the other side of the Kakhovka water reservoir. The parties blame each other for the attacks that pose a threat of nuclear disaster.

On 25 August, for the first time in history, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was completely disconnected from the power grid. Dmytro Orlov, the Mayor of Enerhodar, said that it happened after the shelling, and Energoatom said that the disconnection was caused by fires. Later, the IAEA reported that the ZNPP had restored the connection to the fourth power line of the energy system of Ukraine, but all 6 power units remained disconnected.
